The DK Metcalf Situation

@mrsports604

Trade or Extend. The new talking point every message board seems to have posted. The latest and greatest in what feels like: ‘the worst offseason any Seahawks fan could ask for.’ Fans have been dealing with the trade rumors for two seasons now, and now this. Trade rumors surrounding the Seahawk’s 24-year old superstar wide receiver DK Metcalf.

I believe DK Metcalf is a top 10 receiver in the NFL, today. He is still only 24 years old and his best football is ahead of him. He still has an incredible amount of talent and physical skills to become the next great thing at the wide receiver position. Trading him only sets the organization back further.

The Seahawks need good football players on their roster to win, but, don’t let that fool you. Football is still a business. Big-time players put fans in seats. Sells the next wave of jerseys that all the fans want. DK Metcalf is the new poster boy for the Seattle Seahawks He likes Seattle. He has embraced Seattle. The Seahawks have the cap room over the next two seasons to get it done. DK has said publicly that he feels it is his ‘time’ to be the leader in Seattle with Russ and Bobby exiting this offseason.

DK isn’t going anywhere. I envision that he signs a massive contract deal at some point this off-season, closer to training camp if I had to take a guess. Having DK Metcalf in your building makes you a better football program. The only way that you trade him is if you are getting another ‘haul’ in return.

This is the offseason, and everyone seems to be sharing their own thoughts on a potential trade. Let’s talk about two hypothetical trades that I would feel comfortable discussing.

The New York Jets are a team that makes the most sense as a trade suitor. They offer cap space to extend DK and the assets to make the Seahawks an offer they cannot refuse. A Jets team that has invested this off-season in improving the makeup of their roster. They are building what looks to be a strong culture within that building. They still have a wealthy amount of top 100 picks in this year’s draft. A few missing spots along the roster that can be easily plug-and-play draft picks that can slide in. However, that “big-time weapon” for Zach Wilson. A freak-athlete that can take the top off a defense and truly make your offense scary. A true WR1 is what they are looking for, obviously. They were rumored to be involved in the Tyreek Hill sweepstakes before he chose the Miami Dolphins. It almost makes too much sense for the Jets to make an all-in play for DK Metcalf.

New York Jets Receive

  • WR DK Metcalf
  • 2022 4th Round Pick (#109)

Seattle Seahawks Receive

  • OT Mekhi Becton
  • 2022 1st Round Pick (#10)
  • 2022 2nd Round Pick (#69)
  • 2023 2nd Round Pick

The Kansas City Chiefs are my second ideal trade scenario. Both teams have made multiple trades with Seahawks GM John Schnieder and are both in the opposing conference. Ultimately, I went with familiarity and need, in these scenarios. If you are reading this, you obviously know the need for a deep threat wide receiver for the Chiefs. Tyreek Hill is down in Miami now, and Patrick Mahomes is in need of a true WR1 all of sudden. Insert DK Metcalf. The Chiefs have enough draft capital to convince the Seahawks to depart with DK.

Kansas City Chiefs Recieve:

  • WR DK Metcalf
  • 2022 3rd Round Pick (#72)

Seattle Seahawks Recieve

  • 2022 1st Round Pick (#29) via SF
  • 2022 2nd Round Pick (#50) via MIA
  • 2022 4th Round Pick (#103)
  • 2023 1st Round Pick (KC)

We have come full circle and I feel like I have to re-iterate this point: DO NOT TRADE DK METCALF. Players of DK’s stature and potential in this league do not just grow on trees, they are difficult to come by. DK Metcalf MUST be a part of the future of the Seattle Seahawks. He is far too valuable.

I hope that you enjoyed reading this as much as I am having writing these articles. Thank you to all that continue to share these. Please leave me a comment or let me know what kind of content you would like to see. Check us out on Twitter: @mrsports604
